Medically reviewed by Dr. Shirin Milani / Dr. Veith Moser — Specialists in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (Austrian Medical Chamber)Last updated: 26.03.2026

A sustainable and aesthetic treatment for umbilical hernia and rectus diastasis is possible without relying on foreign materials such as mesh. By combining the procedure with an abdominoplasty, hernias and muscle separation can be corrected both functionally and aesthetically, resulting in a stable and resilient abdominal wall.

Aesthetic Solution for Umbilical Hernia and Rectus Diastasis – Without Mesh or Foreign Materials

After pregnancies, weight gain, or abdominal surgeries, it is common to experience an umbilical hernia or rectus diastasis, which is the separation of the abdominal muscles. This issue can be effectively resolved in combination with an abdominoplasty, without the need to introduce foreign materials such as mesh.

However, if the problem is treated separately – addressing only the umbilical hernia – it often results in a less resilient abdominal wall. This is because, in such cases, the umbilicus is detached from the abdominal wall, compromising its functionality.

I often see patients in my practice who have undergone umbilical hernia repairs or had mesh implanted as part of rectus diastasis treatment and are dissatisfied with the aesthetic outcome. Unfortunately, the options for correction in such cases are highly limited or, in some instances, no longer viable.
