Tummy tuck

Medically reviewed by Dr. Shirin Milani / Dr. Veith Moser — Specialists in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (Austrian Medical Chamber)Last updated: 26.03.2026
Actually, you should be happy when you finally get rid of the extra kilos. You should be happy that your body is yours again after pregnancy. ?Actually… Because sometimes an undesirable good-for-nothing remains: a flabby stomach that you never dreamed of. This can also be genetic or result from massive weight loss. In contrast, a tummy tuck helps by strengthening the abdominal wall, creating a so-called inner corset.
Thanks to the removal of excess skin, the body regains its old shape - or an even better one — back.

    Surgery Highlights

The procedure is carried out under general anesthesia and includes, if necessary, tightening of the rectus muscle. First, an incision is made as deep as possible in the bikini area to remove the abdominal skin and fatty tissue. In most cases, the navel will also need to be cut out and repositioned. If the abdominal wall is weak (for example after pregnancy), the abdominal muscles that have moved apart are sewn together, which strengthens the abdominal wall and gives the waist contour. The excess skin is then removed and the wound is closed with absorbable suture material (no suture removal). To support healing, an abdominal belt should be worn for three weeks and compression pants for 3 to 4 weeks.
If there is excess skin in the upper abdominal area, this will be done the incision below the breast in order to then pull the slack skin soft tissue upwards.

    Possible Risks

Sometimes bleeding and bruising may occur. Infections with impaired wound healing are rare. The numbness in the area of the front abdominal wall usually subsides after a few months. Disturbing scars can be corrected after 6-12 months. Incidents and complications are rare, but can never be completely ruled out. In addition to wound healing disorders, these include: seroma formation (this is a collection of fluid that can form in the cavity between muscle and fatty tissue and must be vacuumed out sterilely) and necrosis, which is dying tissue due to circulatory disorders, which mainly affect smokers.
