Breast asymmetry

Medically reviewed by Dr. Shirin Milani / Dr. Veith Moser — Specialists in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (Austrian Medical Chamber)Last updated: 26.03.2026

90% of all women experience small differences in breast size. But with larger, congenital asymmetries, the breasts often also differ in shape. Then the larger breast is more round and hanging, the smaller breast is more pointed. The differences can often also be found in the size and shape of the nipples. Further asymmetries can arise as a result of an accident (e.g. burns), capsular fibrosis after augmentation, as a result of illness (e.g. after a breast tumor, abscess, mastitis, effects of radiation).

One of the most common deformities is the tubule Deformity or also called Snoopy deformity.

Breast asymmetry

Depending on the reason for the asymmetry, different surgical methods may be necessary, such as a pure tightening or combined with a reduction, and in some cases it may also be necessary to insert an implant.

Op Der Brustasymmetrie auf einen Blick

Surgery duration: 1 - 2 hours
Anesthesia: general anesthesia
Hospital stay: 1 night
Metal-free sports bra: 6 weeks (day and night)
Sports: after 4 weeks at the earliest
Social: immediately
Inability to work: a few days

Before Surgery

  • For a period of around 14 days before the operation, you should avoid medications that contain acetylsalicylic acid (e.g. aspirin, ASA, etc.), as these impair blood clotting.
  • li>
  • You should also largely avoid alcohol, cigarettes and sleeping pills. Nicotine can also reduce blood flow and delay wound healing. Therefore, avoid nicotine two weeks before the operation and also during the wound healing phase.
  • After Surgery

    • Seam removal is usually not necessary with self-dissolving suture material
    • Metal-free sports bra: 6 weeks (day and night)
    • No heavy work with the arms: at least 3 weeks

    Surgery Highlights

Depending on the underlying pathology, a unilateral or bilateral correction is carried out. In the case of congenital malformations, the incorrect position of the skin layer that is too tight or too wide is corrected by expansion, insertion of prostheses, autologous tissue or breast lift or breast reduction. After accidents, burns or radiation, scar correction, skin transplants, local flaps, tissue expansion using expanders or expander prostheses or simply prosthetic inserts may be necessary. In the case of capsular hardening (capsular fibrosis) after breast enlargement (breast augmentation), a new prosthesis can only be inserted through a reoperation with capsular expansion or capsule removal. In any case, the prosthesis bearing should be changed (episubmuscular or subfascial positioning). Additionally, in some cases, symmetry can only be achieved with unilateral or bilateral tightening surgery.

    Possible Risks

Any swelling and discoloration caused by bruising will subside after about three weeks. Numbness is sometimes felt in the nipple area, but usually goes away.
