Autologous fat injection

Medically reviewed by Dr. Shirin Milani / Dr. Veith Moser — Specialists in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (Austrian Medical Chamber)Last updated: 26.03.2026
We don't like to talk about it, we even less like to see it and if we ourselves are affected by it, we certainly don't want to admit it. We are talking about contour irregularities, also called dents. These are disturbing signs of aging or the consequences of injuries and illnesses. And especially on the face they become a major psychological burden.

Autologous fat injection – treatment at Moser Milani Medical Spa in Vienna

Autologous fat injection

Injection with your own fat
The treatment options include the implantation of prostheses (usually individually adapted silicone or PTFE prostheses). Injection of fillers (hyaluronic acid, collagen, etc.) or fat injection are available.
In principle, two different filling substances are available for fillers:
1. Dissolvable fillers are broken down by the body over a certain period of time (between 4 and 18 months, depending on the material and the patient).
< div>2. Permanent fillers (non-dissolvable), on the other hand, remain present in the area of the injection site for life. Although there is a permanent correction of the contour disorder, the non-dissolvable filling material very often causes problems in the form of foreign body reactions (redness, lump formation, pain, etc.). ??During autologous fat injection (dissolvable filler), excess fatty tissue is removed either from the abdomen, the inner thigh and groin region or from the knee region. The fat is processed using a special process (centrifugation) and is then available in sterile form as harmless autologous tissue.
When treating wrinkles using fillers (hyaluronic acid), permanent Deep wrinkles can be improved and even completely smoothed. To do this, the hyaluronic acid is injected directly under the wrinkle, which is then plumped up and smoothed. The effect lasts for 6 to 12 months.

Before Surgery

  • For a period of around 14 days before the fat injection, you should stop taking medication containing acetylsalicylic acid (e.g. aspirin , ASA, etc.) as they impair blood clotting.
  • You should also avoid alcohol, cigarettes and Avoid sleeping pills as much as possible. Nicotine can also reduce blood flow to organs and delay wound healing. Therefore, avoid nicotine two weeks before the operation and also during the wound healing phase.

After Surgery

  • No exercise for 2 weeks
  • Cooling compresses in the first 5 – 7 days in the area of the injection site

Surgery Highlights

Before the operation, autologous fat is removed from the stomach or legs (similar to liposuction, but in significantly smaller quantities) and then processed. It can then be used by injection to fill contour irregularities.

Possible Risks

Any swelling and discoloration caused by bruising in the donor area usually subsides after two weeks. The risk of infection, bleeding, or nerve injury is very low. In a certain sense, the body's own fat is broken down again, which is why it is not possible to make a certain statement about the duration of success and it varies from person to person. One or two subsequent injections may be necessary to achieve a lasting result.
