inverted nipples

Medically reviewed by Dr. Shirin Milani / Dr. Veith Moser — Specialists in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (Austrian Medical Chamber)Last updated: 26.03.2026

An inverted nipple, the so-called “inverted nipple”, can be permanently retracted or due to cold irritation. In addition to aesthetic problems, this can also lead to hygienic problems and should be remedied. During inverted nipple correction, the fibers that are responsible for this condition are severed through a small incision in the area of the areola. The scar formed during the inverted nipple correction can hardly be seen later.

Schlupfwarzen OP im Überblick

Operation duration: 1 hour

Anesthesia: local anesthesia

Hospital stay: outpatient
Sport: after 2 weeks
No heavy work with the upper body or overhead work for 6 weeks.

Before Surgery

  • For a period of around 14 days before the correction of inverted nipples, you should avoid medications that contain acetylsalicylic acid (e.g. aspirin, ASA, etc.), as these impair blood clotting.
  • You should also largely avoid alcohol, cigarettes and sleeping pills. Nicotine can also reduce blood flow to organs and delay wound healing. Therefore, avoid nicotine two weeks before the operation and also during the wound healing phase.

After Surgery

  • Thread removal: after 3 to 4 weeks

Surgery Highlights

The correction of the inverted nipple is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Through a small incision, the fibers that pull the nipple in are severed and the nipple can be removed again.

Possible Risks

Any swelling and discoloration caused by bruising usually subsides after one to two weeks. Sensation problems in the nipple and areola area can occur. In most cases, breastfeeding is unfortunately no longer possible after the operation.
